Exclusive Typographic Footwear
In his speech during the graduation ceremony of the Plantin Institute of Typography on September 10, 2011, Blokland said that it is rather strange that visitors to Museum Plantin-Moretus are allowed to keep their footwear on. One would expect that visitors to this Sacred Temple of Typography would be asked to take off their shoes. On the other hand, this can have a negative effect on the content and quality of the atmosphere in the museum, and therefore on the valuable collection.
So, Blokland’s suggestion was that future visitors to the museum should wear Plantoffels™. ‘Pantoffel’ is the Dutch word for indoor slipper and the brand name Plantoffels™ has its origins in the surname and first name of Christoffel Plantin. However, one can imagine that there will also be a lot of interest in Plantoffels™ outside the museum and that is why they will soon also be available online (of course only via this site). Shoe size will be determined in different, mutually incompatible systems, as in the best typographical tradition.
